The government through the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PU-Pera) continues to encourage the provision of safe, comfortable, and affordable housing and settlements. As a form of support for the government, PT Semen Indonesia SIG through its subsidiary PT Semen Padang presents an innovation in interlocking brick products as a solution for building houses that are faster, more economical, aesthetic, and environmentally friendly.
Interlocking bricks are a product of applied research with the mechanism of interlocking bricks between blocks like the lego system. The use of interlocking bricks provides many advantages over conventional materials in home construction, because it is more efficient in the use of materials and easier in application.
The construction duration of building a house using interlocking bricks is also faster than ordinary bricks because it does not require a brick soaking process, provision of a casting mold box or formwork, application of adhesive or mortar on each layer of brick, and the addition of plaster and cement.
Interlocking bricks have also been declared earthquake-friendly for areas with high seismicity levels (KDS D) based on the 2D wall cyclic test at the Center for Building Facilities and Structures, Directorate General of Settlement and Housing Engineering Development.
SIG Business and Marketing Director, Subhan, said that interlocking bricks are a solution to produce sturdy and aesthetic buildings as desired, in a faster, more economical and environmentally friendly way. The product is very suitable for use in various housing development projects, including supporting efforts to accelerate the fulfillment of housing backlogs.
“The presence of interlocking bricks further enriches SIG’s product portfolio and environmentally friendly building material solutions because they are produced using green cement with lower carbon emissions, and have met the quality standards of SNI 03-0349-1989 concerning Wall Concrete Bricks,” said Subhan.

The development of interlocking bricks began in 2019 through the collaboration of the Non-Cement Incubation Business Unit of PT Semen Padang with the SIG Research & Development Department, and was continued with the business incubation process since 2023 by the Non-Cement Incubation Business Unit of PT Semen Padang.
This innovative product has been used in more than 100 housing units in several infrastructure projects in West Sumatra and Jambi. This innovation can support the acceleration of reducing the number of home ownership backlogs in Indonesia, which according to the 2023 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) Data shows a figure of 9.9 million units, with 26.9 million households not having access to decent housing.
“SIG is ready to collaborate with various parties to make housing and settlement development projects a success, both in the IKN and other regions. As a state-owned company, SIG is committed to continuing to contribute and be part of sustainable development in Indonesia,” said Subhan.
