The National Public Security Union, representing municipal police officers, announced on Tuesday that it would file an indefinite strike notice from November 15, in response to the government’s desire to toughen the conditions of sick leave compensation for civil servants.
As announced to Le Parisien by Budget Minister Laurent Saint-Martin, the government wants to move to three days of waiting time, compared to one currently, so that compensation would begin on the fourth day, and pay less for downtime, up to 90 % of salary, versus 100%.
“Morale is already at half mast”
These measures are part of a total of 5 billion euros in additional savings unveiled on Sunday by the government and which will be subject to amendments to the budget. Targeting sick leave in the civil service aims to save €1.2 billion.
This national and unlimited strike notice, from November 15, “concerns all municipal police officers, whether trainees or permanent,” specifies the National Union of Public Security in a press release, signed by its president Stéphane Poupeau.
“If this measure is adopted, you will once again demotivate the 27,000 French municipal police officers, who have already had low morale for several years in the absence of a satisfactory social component,” adds the union.
