Interview with Iuli Taakalou
This also applies to little Anastasia. One day he will learn what real stories are, the ones grown-ups call “news.” She will discover it together with her classmates through a random event and very soon they will become hunters of true stories, i.e. little journalists. This way they will understand how important the news is in learning to think and deal with situations with proper judgment without magic wands and superheroes. Bad wolves will always exist, as will good fairies, as long as they can be picked out with the right guidance! Sia Kosioni talks regarding her book “Another story”.
How does an adult break into the fantasy world of a child’s imagination?
You do not invade the world of children’s fantasy. You knock on the door, they open it for you and if you speak their language, they let you in and you go in! If they have a good time with you, they give you the key. Everyone has their own way, but if I can share some tips, it’s to be open, to show real interest in the games and the fantastic stories they make up in their wonderful heads. To encourage them with discussions and questions, letting them lead, thus creating strong bonds. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to let your funny childish side show. There is always somewhere inside us!
What is the purpose of your book ‘Another Story’ from publishing Lebee Publications;
The purpose of the book is to instill in children an interest in what is happening around them in order to develop empathy, mutual respect and mutual understanding. To help children learn caring, solidarity and tolerance. I really hope that through this book I can manage, even to a small extent, to have active children who will learn to think.
Do you think it is important to teach children from a young age how to handle the value of true stories and the rules they will need to understand in order to handle them?
Of course! Because as wonderful as fairies, elves and superheroes are, children must slowly be able to distinguish and understand that “bad wolves and good fairies” exist in real life too. Perhaps with a slightly different face and without magic wands, we can all become superheroes, if we actively participate and have a voice for what is happening around us.

Experts have been ringing alarm bells in recent years worrying regarding the effects of a screen-immersed childhood. What is your opinion?
That everything is needed in moderation. You can’t exclude children from technological development. They will live in front of screens. And furthermore, it is the most favored generation in terms of access to information. They must learn to use properly. We parents are called upon to find the right balance, so that the activity is positive and educational.
What do you think books aimed at young readers should be, educational, literary or non-fiction with educational goals?
To respect the child. To find ways to open paths in his mind and soul. Stimulate his thinking through words, meanings and images. Addressing children is much more difficult than addressing adults. And it certainly carries more responsibility.
After all these years, what is recognition for you? What face does he have tracking a different space?
Appreciation for me is trust. Since 19 years in this job I have been fighting for a journalism that is both combative and dignified and for treating my audience as thinking citizens and not as a herd or herd. This is a constant struggle and as long as I am in this space I will not stop trying. This book enables me to claim the trust of even the most demanding audience, which is none other than children. I wish I might make it!
Didn’t you dread the idea of conveying the harsh image of the news to young children?
The news can be very harsh and shocking not only for children but also for us. If we want to convey some things to children, we have to do it with great sensitivity, the language we use must always be appropriate, so that it can be understood at the age of the child, and there must definitely be a separation of what news is this to which a child may be exposed. What I am suggesting is not to forcefully throw them into a cesspool of pain and violence, but to teach our children the need to become informed adults, with a point of view and a willingness to co-shape this world.
