Achaia Member of Parliament Sia Anagnostopoulou submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister of Health on the subject: “The tragic situation at the Aegio Hospital: A cry of anguish from the doctors”.
In a shocking complaint, the doctors of the Aegio Hospital paint a picture of dead end and tragedy. Lack of staff, non-observance of safety rules, daily suffering for patients and employees – the situation in the hospital is bordering on inhumane.
For months, the Aigio hospital has been operating understaffed, reaching the limits of safety. The on-call schedule falls short of the rules, putting both patients and doctors at risk. The emergency department of the surgical sector is often left without any doctor, leading to suffering, analgesia and indignity for the patients.
The administration, despite repeated updates and warnings, remains inactive, unable or unwilling to take meaningful action. The excuse “I can’t do something” is becoming more and more unbearable, especially when even temporary solutions proposed by the Ministry of Health are not implemented.
The staff shortage will become even more dramatic in May, since it has multiple holidays due to the holidays and Aegialia will double its population. For 12 days, the emergency department of the surgical department will be without a doctor, while the days with only one doctor in the TEPs will still be numerous. The remaining doctors are required to fill the gaps with illegal and dangerous to public health on-call, with 20-plus calls for some. The inadequacy of management spills over into medical and nursing staff, who are called upon to sacrifice their health and safety to fill the gaps.
The Member of Parliament for Achaia asks the Minister what measures he intends to take to staff the Hospital with more doctors, so that it can continue to operate safely for the patients as well as for the employees, whether the future recruitments will be sufficient to cover the shortages and how will ensure the provision of quality services in the near future.
