Shrouds and a brawl at the opening of the Iraqi parliament

The election of Al-Halbousi as Speaker of the “Representatives” … and two lists from the Sadrist movement and the “Coordination Framework” of the “largest bloc”

The opening of the first session of the Iraqi parliament yesterday witnessed a quarrel and chaos, while the shrouds worn by the Sadrist movement’s deputies, in an indication of their “readiness to die,” while Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, who presided over the session because he was the oldest parliamentarian, was attacked.

The two largest Sunni alliances, “Progress” led by Muhammad al-Halbousi and “Azm” led by Khamis al-Khanjar, entered the session as a single bloc and elected their candidate al-Halbousi as speaker of parliament, Hakim al-Zamili (Sadr) as his first deputy and Shakhwan Abdullah (Kurdistan Democratic Party) as a second deputy.

As soon as the deputies finished taking the constitutional oath, Ahmed al-Asadi, a representative of the “coordinating framework” that includes opponents of al-Sadr, led by Nuri al-Maliki and Qais al-Khazali, rushed to present the framework to the “president of the age” as the largest bloc with 88 deputies. At that point, a sharp argument broke out between the “Attar” deputies and the Sadrist movement, which led to the head of the age, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, to adjourn the session, which exposed him to an attack, following which he was transferred to the hospital.

Later yesterday evening, the Sadrist movement submitted its list of the “largest bloc” to the elected parliament speaker.

The progress of the Sadrist movement and the “coordinating framework” with two competing lists of the “largest bloc” portends the expansion of the Shiite-Shiite dispute.
