Shrek 5 has been officially announced and will arrive in June 2026

There is no doubt that one of the most iconic franchises in the world of animated film is Dreamworks’ Shrek, which, since its first feature film released in 2001, has fully entered popular culture and has not stopped releasing sequels and spin-offs of the original story.

Now, to continue his legacy, Dreamworks has announced that Shrek 5 will be released on July 1, 2026, and Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will return to once once more play Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona respectively.

While not much is known regarding the plot of this upcoming animated film, it has been in development in one form or another for the better part of a decade, and writer Michael McCullers hinted that it would bring “a pretty big reinvention” to the franchise. McCullers’ statement had some wondering if the film would be a reboot or if it would pick up the story following the events of 2010’s Shrek 4.

Let’s also remember that the movie Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (which was a resounding success in 2022 and was nominated for Best Animated Film at the 95th Academy Awards in 2023), hinted in a final scene at the possibility of Shrek’s return when Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) and his friends were heading to meet up with “some old friends” in Far Far Away.

“I’ve been with this cat for almost 20 years,” Banderas previously joked. in a 2022 interview. “The first time I did The cat with boots I was working on Broadway, so I did my first session there. I’ve done five movies now. There will probably be another one, and Shrek I will probably come back.”
