should we stop wearing underwear in bed?

The clothing needed for a good night’s sleep, whether in pajamas or completely naked, is a very personal choice, says Sherry A. Ross, obstetrician-gynecologist and women’s health expert. “It’s completely safe to sleep naked and it can even be beneficial,” she says.

Underwear has two main purposes: hygiene and protection, says dermatologist David E. Bank. Wearing well-fitting, breathable underwear at night can help wick away sweat and moisture while providing security in the event of urinary or menstrual leakage. “But do you need underwear to feel clean and comfortable? No!” replies dermatologist Bank.

Mattress Advisor, a sleep quality consulting firm, conducted a study with over 1,000 people. 58% of respondents said prefer to sleep naked. Slightly more men than women said they preferred without underwear.

Age also has a role to play: 65% of millennials report sleeping naked, compared to 45% of Gen Xers and 39% of baby boomers. It’s all regarding personal comfort!
