Helmut Marko has ignored suggestions that Red Bull Racing should reunite with the in-form Alex Albon. At the wheel of the Williams, Albon finished in the top five or six throughout the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, finishing eighth in the race. It was an awkwardly timed performance for Max Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez, who will replace Albon in 2021 as he replaced a then-struggling team.
However, Marko said it was “clear” that Perez is under contract for 2024. “We want to finish second in the championship, so we are putting pressure on him to do better,” said Red Bull F1’s motorsport adviser. But broadcaster Viaplay asked Marko if the impressive Albon, now 27, should be returned to the Red Bull Racing cockpit. “Max’s teammate has a very tough and difficult life,” Marko said. “Albon has already had his chance once.” Williams’ comeback from 2018 was equally impressive. “It was very impressive,” Verstappen said at Zandvoort. “I’m very happy for Alex. I’m very happy to have him there.” Former Williams driver George Russell agreed. “Williams are making great progress now and James Bowles is really I think it has a positive impact.”
