Shortest Municipal Council in Brussels History: Opposition Walkout and Delayed Start

2023-10-02 15:34:00

This is undoubtedly the shortest municipal council in the history of the city of Brussels. This followingnoon, the elected representatives of the opposition left the municipal council before it was held due to the delay of several municipal councilors from the majority. More precisely, four elected officials from the majority were not present at 4:30 p.m., at the start of the municipal council. This earned criticism from all opposition parties: Les Engagés, the MR and the PTB.

Following this vindictiveness, the president of the municipal council Mohamed Ouriaghli (PS) proposed to postpone the start of the council to 5 p.m. In the meantime, the opposition elected officials left the session a little before 5 p.m.

”No City of Brussels advice this evening. The PS-Vooruit-Ecolo-Groen-Défi majority not capable of bringing together a majority. Not the first time. Thus, they block any democratic debate,” tweeted Bruno Bauwens (PTB).

While group leader David Weytsman criticized that “week following week, the PS-Ecolo-Défi majority in the @VilleBruxelles no longer manages to bring together the quorum to begin work, endangering democracy. The opposition leaves and proposes to postpone the work until next week.”

Except that the majority still managed to bring together enough elected officials to vote on the points on the agenda. The quorum was finally reached a little before 5 p.m.
