To avoid the challenges imposed on teachers hired in August, the director general of Collège Charles-Lemoyne, David Bowles, suggests starting the hiring process very early in the year.

Quebec has been experiencing a shortage of manpower in the teaching profession for several years, which generates a small period of panic in the last weeks of the summer.

Mr. Bowles recognizes that it is difficult for these new employees to prepare for their course while acclimating to their new work environment in a matter of weeks or even days.

A guest on the program Le Bilan on the airwaves of LCN, Mr. Bowles, who is also the president of the Federation of Private Education Institutions of Quebec, affirms that “the ideal is for the teacher to be hired at the spring”.

To achieve this, the director puts his organization forward in the hiring process.

“As of February, I make sure to know who is going to retire, how many additional groups we are going to have the following year, who is asking for a year without pay, and I immediately get to work with my team to try to hire people,” he explains.

He also tries to create a sense of belonging with the members of the quorum, right from the start.

Mr. Bowles praises the hiring strategies that are implemented in his school as “5 to 7 jobs, invitations to visit the school and to meet their future colleagues in the spring”.

All these initiatives are put in place to enhance the teaching profession.

For the director, teaching is “a fantastic profession”.

“The vast majority of teachers in Quebec love their jobs,” he adds.

David Bowles maintains that it is essential to stop stigmatizing the image of teachers as depressed, overworked or discouraged, although he acknowledges that it is not an easy job.

“We must also emphasize that it is a wonderful profession in which we will have a real impact on the lives of young people” he insists.

The start of the school year will take place on Tuesday, September 5 in the majority of schools in Quebec and even today several establishments are short of employees.
