Shortage of Measles, Rubella, and Mumps Vaccines in Kaliningrad: Impact on Child Health

In Kaliningrad, parents cannot vaccinate their children against measles, rubella and mumps. This was reported to Klops by fathers and mothers of children whose children are assigned to clinics No. 1 on Tributsa and No. 2 on Leonova.

“At the reception we were told that there were no drugs for several months. Doctors are preparing to work overtime as soon as they arrive. We were warned that if the clinic called and invited us to get vaccinated on Saturday or Sunday, we shouldn’t be surprised,” says Yulia, mother of one-year-old Arthur.

There are no vaccines available from private companies either. Klops called three large network clinics. “We’re waiting for ourselves. It’s been gone for a long time, about six months,” said the Medexpert consultant. We received similar answers in Novomed and Arsmedic.

Klops sent a request to Rospotrebnadzor to find out whether the shortage of vaccines would lead to an increase in the incidence of measles, mumps and rubella among children. The department is confident that there is no danger.

“The temporary absence of a vaccine for routine vaccination of children against measles, rubella and mumps cannot lead to destabilization of the epidemic situation in the region regarding these infections due to the presence of stable collective immunity among residents of the region, as well as the absence of foci of morbidity,” Klops commented on the situation.

As of 19.10, the region has 3,400 doses of measles vaccine (1,030 doses for routine vaccination of children, 2370 doses for work in outbreaks), as well as 2,500 doses of rubella vaccine, Rospotrebnadzor reported. There should be a new supply of medicine by 20.10.

There are also problems with vaccines from the vaccination calendar in Moscow clinics. I wrote about this in early October RBC. In August Medvestnik reported that shortages were also encountered in other regions of the country.

A comprehensive vaccination against measles, rubella and mumps is given twice: at the age of 12–15 months and revaccination upon reaching the age of 6 years. Vaccination against these diseases is included in the mandatory vaccination schedule.
