A SHORT FILM titled ‘Kebaya Kala Kini’ by director Bramsky in collaboration with Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation will be launched on National Kebaya Day which falls on July 24. This film is an invitation to the public to wear kebaya and continue to preserve it.

Starring a number of famous Indonesian artists and artists such as Dian Sastrowardoyo, Putri Marino, Syandria Kameron to Woro Mustiko, this film invites the audience to explore the journey of kebaya as an identity of Indonesian women from time to time. Kebaya Kala Kini can be watched starting July 24 on the Indonesia Kaya YouTube channel.

“Kebaya Kala Kini invites us to explore kebaya that not only exudes elegance, but also depicts the toughness and gentleness of Indonesian women. Kebaya is a national identity that unites all social classes across borders spread throughout the archipelago with various variations,” said Program Director of Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation Renitasari Adrian in a press conference in Jakarta, Tuesday (23/7).

For about 8 minutes, the audience will be presented with a portrait of the beauty of Indonesian women in kebaya. There are dozens of types of kebaya presented, starting from kutubaru kebaya, kartini, encim, Balinese kebaya to modern.

Filmed in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, almost throughout the film the audience will be presented with the green expanse of rice fields combined with the beauty of dozens of women in kebaya. The narration read by Dian Sastrowardoyo throughout the film with excellent intonation, inspires the audience to witness the journey of kebaya as the identity of Indonesian women from time to time.

“If Kebaya could talk, what story would it tell? That’s the idea we want to show. Kebaya becomes a witness to a woman’s life journey from youth to adulthood,” said Bramsky.

There are several metaphors presented in this short film, ranging from simple ones to depicting a hope and prayer. One of them is a visual of contemplating on a train which is actually a depiction or hope of where the kebaya will be taken in the modern era today.

Renitasari hopes that this short film can inspire women in Indonesia to make kebaya a part of their daily activities. So that it will provide a positive economic impact for all kebaya business actors ranging from tailors, fashion designers and other creative actors.

“Hopefully this work will be a reminder or the strength and beauty of the kebaya that continues to live and inspire. Happy National Kebaya Day,” said Renitasari. (M-3)
