Shooting leaves 3 injured in Nevada, United States

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Three northern Nevada police officers were shot and wounded the day before yesterday when a traffic stop in the Reno area quickly escalated into a standoff that lasted several hours and resulted in a shootout between officers and the suspect, police reported.

Chris Crawforth, police chief of the nearby city of Sparks, said at a news conference yesterday that the injured police officers, two Sparks police officers and one from Washoe County, received medical attention and were released.

The violent confrontation ended the night before last around 10:30 a.m. when police found the suspect dead in a stranger’s house where he had been hiding, Crawforth said.

The name of the alleged attacker has not been released.

The shooting began with a traffic stop, regarding nine hours earlier.

When a Sparks police officer approached the vehicle, the driver pulled out a gun and shot through the glass, Crawford said, hitting the officer in the shoulder.

The driver fled, but crashed the vehicle and continued on foot, leading police from three agencies toward a suburban neighborhood a few miles east of Reno.

Police closed surrounding streets, evacuated several homes and told other residents to stay put within a four-block perimeter of the neighborhood.

According to Crawforth, officers approached a house where the attacker was seen entering.

A “female senior resident” opened the door and fell to the floor when the suspect opened fire on the officers, he reported.

That’s when the Washoe County sheriff’s deputy and another Sparks officer were wounded, Crawforth said.

The suspect ran, Crawforth said, and fired at the officers once more from the backyard of another house, before hiding inside.

During the prolonged shootout, the suspect shot “several times” at the police officers, who returned fire, he said.

Crawforth did not provide details on how the suspect died.
