A resident of Thio, on the east coast of New Caledonia, has been indicted for intentional homicide, the prosecutor announced on Monday, following the shooting of a 22-year-old motorist who was skidding with his vehicle.

According to the press release from the public prosecutor in Nouméa, Yves Dupas, a 22-year-old man was driving at high speed and skidding in what looks like a gymkhana or rodeo, at the entrance to this town of 2,500 inhabitants. on the night of Friday to Saturday, when he was fatally shot in the head by a rifle shot.

Angered by the screeching of the car’s tires, a resident of a neighboring property left his home, shotgun armed with buckshot in hand, and fired “five times in the direction of the vehicle” around 2:30 a.m. says the public prosecutor.

“According to initial ballistic findings, the vehicle was hit by at least two shots, representing a series of projectiles,” the statement added.

The alleged perpetrator, a 40-year-old man “fully integrated”, was then the target of violence from relatives of the victim, before being evacuated to hospital, in the suburbs of Noumea. During the police custody that followed, he said he had fired “without thinking, and without wanting to hurt or kill anyone”.

He added that he regretted his action, realizing “that he had taken the life of a person”, which moreover, “he did not know”, according to the press release from the prosecutor.
