ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — Two soldiers and an insurgent were killed in a gunfire during a nighttime military operation once morest the insurgency in northwest Pakistan, on the border with Afghanistan.

In a statement, the army explained late Friday that security forces launched an operation in Miran Shah, the most important city in North Waziristan, “to eliminate the remaining terrorists” following receiving concrete intelligence reports regarding the presence of radicals.

As the troops approached the scene, a group of insurgents was sighted and intercepted, sparking an intense firefight that resulted in the death of the army major leading the operation and another soldier. One of the radicals was killed and another was wounded.

The army said it carried out another raid on a militant hideout in the Tirah valley in Khyber district, also next to the Afghan border, where a soldier and an insurgent were killed earlier on Friday.

Insurgent attacks once morest security forces in the northwest of the country had increased in recent days.

After a multi-year operation, the Pakistani army announced that it had cleared the region of local and foreign militants. But the occasional attacks continue, raising concerns that the local Taliban affiliate, called Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, has been able to find sanctuaries in Afghanistan and is regrouping in the area.
