Shooting in Lakeland, Florida, leaves several people injured, authorities report

(CNN) –– At least 10 people were injured in a drive-by shooting in Lakeland, Florida, Monday followingnoon, police said. Two of the injured are in critical condition, authorities added.

A dark blue Nissan sedan appeared to pull up at the scene of the shooting, Lakeland Police Department Chief Sam Taylor said.

“The vehicle slowed down, did not stop and all four windows were rolled down. It appeared to be occupied by four attackers in the vehicle,” Taylor said. “They started shooting from all four windows of the vehicle and at men on both sides,” he added. .

Eight of the victims suffered non-fatal injuries, the official explained during a press conference on Monday night.

Police believe it was a targeted incident, Taylor said.

The Nissan sped off and police are “actively looking for that vehicle now,” he added.

“We’re going to be out there most of the night trying to figure out who these people are in the vehicle,” Taylor warned.

Police found a “quantity” of marijuana at the scene, indicating to police that “there was a narcotics sale or marijuana sale going on at the time,” Taylor said. “It is unknown if that is significant or related to this.”

The chief said that in his 34 years with the department, he had never worked on a case where so many people had been shot at the same time.

“This is something that doesn’t happen to Lakeland,” he said.

Initially, the police spoke of 9 victims.

According to the first statement from the authorities, the police officers went to a place near Iowa Avenue North and Plum Street at approximately 3:43 pm Miami time.

Lakeland, Florida is located approximately 88.5 kilometers southwest of Orlando.
