Shooting at US 4th of July parade leaves at least six dead and the number of injured rises to 24

At least six people were killed and 24 injured in a shooting on Monday. during the 4th of July parade in Highland Parka suburb of Chicago in the United States.

According to the police, authorities are looking for a suspect that he probably fired at those present at the festivities from a roof.

Highland Park Police Commander Chris O’Neill, incident commander at the scene, urged people to shelter in place while authorities search for the suspect, described as a white male wearing a white or blue t-shirt.

Christopher Covelli, a spokesman for the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, told a news conference that the gunman apparently opened fire on parade attendees from a roof with a rifle that authorities recovered at the scene. Covelli did not know from which building the shots were fired.

According to the spokesman, the police believe that there was only one assailant and warned that should still be considered armed and dangerous.

Highland Park Police first reported that five people were killed and 19 taken to hospitals, but those figures were updated following the news conference.

As detailed by the Chicago Sun-Times regarding the event, the parade suddenly stopped when shots were heard regarding 10 minutes following it beganat 10:00 a.m. (local time), causing hundreds of people to run for safety.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker indicated that he was monitoring the situation, and that all state resources were available to the community. “We will continue to work with local officials to help those affected,” he said.
