Console games are basically played with a gamepad, so many games are designed for the pad. However, in a shooting game, it is difficult to follow the camera switching speed of a mouse with an analog stick on a pad, so many users enjoy playing so-called ‘Kima’ by connecting a keyboard and mouse to a console. As a result, some games apply various corrections to pad users with disadvantageous controls to balance them.

However, a problem arises as Kima users receive various corrections applied to pad users in an expedient way. If it was a general game such as aiming or moving the point of view, Kima users would receive corrections that might be called nuclear. This is done through a ‘converter’ that changes the signal so that the chima is recognized as a gamepad.

As the indiscriminate use of the converter continued, user complaints piled up day by day, and eventually major developers began to announce their stance that they would restrict the use of the Kima converter. Accordingly, Game Mecca summarized the current status of how major FPS and TPS games are coping with Kima Converter.

Call of Duty, catches the converter with the introduction of the replay function

Activision Blizzard has been applying an anti-cheat system called ‘Ricochet Anti-Cheat’ to the Call of Duty series since 2021. Ricochet Anti-Cheat is a system that monitors all gameplay, including PvP matches, and bans accounts when cheating is confirmed. However, since the use of converters might not be detected technically, complaints from console users piled up.

In response, the Call of Duty anti-cheat team announced in April that it would strengthen monitoring by adding a replay tool. Through this tool, it is said that accounts suspected of cheating and all competitive games will be thoroughly investigated. A function to detect the use of some converters has also been added. When an input to a third-party hardware device is detected, a warning message is displayed, and if it is ignored, sanctions are imposed according to the terms and conditions. Whether these attempts are actually having an effect, users are responding that the number of users suspected of using the converter has decreased since the announcement.

Destiny 2 starts crackdown in earnest, including suspension of maximum account

In Destiny Guardians, even in high-difficulty competitive PvP, points regarding balance have been constantly raised because Kima users and pad users are matched together. The developer, Bungie, has addressed this by nerfing firearms that Kima users show good indicators of, or by putting a significant amount of aim correction into the pad. However, noise continued, such as opinions that the pad side was too advantageous due to excessive aim correction, or that the keyma converter was reopened even if it was restricted.

Eventually, in April, Bungie announced a strong position on its blog that the maximum account suspension for abusing the Kima Converter. Simply playing the game with Kima is not a policy violation, but the act of using external accessibility aids (converters) to reduce recoil or compensate for aim is subject to sanctions. Bungie’s development team emphasized, “We plan to issue warnings, restrictions, or suspensions through monitoring, and evaluate violations not only in PvP but also in PvE.”

Rainbow Six Siege Installs Mousetrap To Catch Kima On Console

Rainbow Six Siege has completely banned the use of chima on consoles. Even when cross-play between Xbox and PS users was supported with the Season 4 update in November last year, the policy of separating the console and PC platforms was maintained. However, as the number of Kima users increased through console converters, console users experienced inconvenience. In response, developer Ubisoft responded by updating a prevention system called Mouse Trap (mousetrap) in April.

A mouse trap is a system that adds lag when a Kima user inputs a certain operation on the console. If you ignore this and continue to use Kima, the lag will gradually worsen, making aiming and shooting virtually impossible. If you want to get rid of the lag, you have to complete the match several times using the normal pads. The Ubisoft development team said, “We proceeded with the patch for fairness to console users and Chima users, and we plan to closely monitor the function.”

Apex Legends is the most serious, so why are there still no sanctions?

Apex Legends cannot be left out as the game that suffers from the most problems with converters. Aim correction is quite high compared to games of the same genre, but the crackdown on the use of converters is not properly done, which is a serious problem. Recently, from the platinum section, I tend to see converter users, and the frequency is excessive enough that even pros point out the situation. Nonetheless, the development team has yet to come up with a specific position, and only the frustration of users is piling up.

Fortnite, passing through with relatively little trouble

Fortnite has been relatively free of the noisy converter issues lately. From the beginning, PC, console, and even mobile users supported cross-play, and the aim correction applied to the pad or mobile was not so great. In addition, the opinion that the efficiency of the keyma and pad differs depending on the build is getting a lot of sympathy, and the balance is also getting good reviews. It was not the intention of the development team, but the situation is continuing without taking any special action on the converter.
