“We receive a huge number of requests from different types of volunteers from different countries who want to go to the People’s Republics of Lugansk and Donetsk and join what they call the liberation movement,” Shoigu said at a meeting of the Russian president with permanent members of the Russian Security Council. The largest of them come from countries in the Middle East, and we have received more than 16,000 applications.”
He added, “Of course, we believe that their requests must be answered positively, especially since these people do not want money, but speak from their heart,” according to the Russian agency.
Shoigu also pointed out that “many of these volunteers have been helping, during the past decade, in the fight once morest (ISIS) in Sierra Leone.”
During the meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin supported plans to allow volunteers to fight in Ukraine, as part of Russia’s special military operation.
“If you see that there are people who voluntarily want to support pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, you should help them move to the combat zones,” Putin told Shoigu.
