Shoe designer Matthias Winkler: “Vegan leather is often a petroleum product” – Fashion & Cosmetics

The room is barely larger than 20 square meters. In the middle there is a small table filled with countless tools and materials. A lamp hangs just above it, bathing the ordered chaos in warm light. Rolls of fabric are stored on shelves on the walls, and next to them is a drawing board with sketches and patterns. It smells of leather and wax – a bit like a cobbler. No wonder, here in the workshop in Berlin-Tempelhof, Matthias Winkler and his team produce high-quality shoes. These are sold all over the world from Osaka to Mexico and can cost over 2000 euros. That’s why the Carinthian native doesn’t live a life of luxury. But he has achieved what many others in the industry only dream of: being able to make a living from his own label – without making any compromises when it comes to quality and sustainability. His shoes are made by hand from textile leftovers. It’s not just customers who appreciate the concept. In 2022, Matthias Winkler won the City of Vienna Fashion Prize worth 10,000 euros.
