The Hubaumont motorway rest area, near Seneffe in Hainaut, was the scene of a distressing scene a few days ago. A truck driver stopped in this E19 car park observed a sad sight just in front of him. In less than two minutes, a driver placed several large black bags filled with trash next to a public trash can. The car is registered in France and it can be assumed that the lady is in her fifties. Once her vehicle was emptied of its rubbish, the driver quickly restarted her Citroën and resumed her journey.
Appalled by the scene, the truck driver filmed everything and posted the video on Facebook on May 16. Since then, the post has been viewed more than 600,000 times. Hundreds of people commented on the images. “It is shameful!“, writes a user. “With the plate, justice can do its duty. A hefty fine!“, writes another.
The state police have been contacted and are investigating.
We contacted the spokesperson for the manager of the Walloon motorway network, Sofico. Héloïse Winandy tells us that the video quickly went up to their services. “As soon as the Walloon Public Service Mobility and Infrastructure became aware of the video, a team was sent to the site. The state police have been contacted and are conducting the investigation to be able, if necessary, to verbalize the author of the deposit“, says the spokesperson.
On the Walloon motorway network, this kind of incivility can lead to a sanction. “The bringing of garbage bags containing waste other than that generated during the journey (example: household waste) in or next to the garbage cans of a motorway area, exposes its author to a penalty of at least 150 €“, specifies the Sofico. The spokesperson for the network manager also recalls that any waste which is not linked to your journey, even if it is deposited in the trash, is considered as illegal dumping.
Four million euros per year to collect waste
The Sofico reminds us that cleanliness is a theme that is dear to it. “For several reasons. First for environmental protection. Then, for safety, because waste on the network can clog drains and cause aquaplaning in the event of heavy rain. Finally, it is expensive in maintenance.“, specifies Héloïse Winandy. On average, in recent years, a little more than 1,000 tonnes of waste per year have been collected on the motorways of Wallonia. In total, their collection represents an average annual cost of four million euros.
