Mega dampener following the steep climb of the form curve! Germany’s tennis star Alexander Zverev not only missed his seventh win in a row in the round of 16 of the tournament in Toronto, the number one of the DTB surprisingly got under the wheels.
Zverev didn’t stand a chance once morest the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at 1: 6 and 2: 6. The Hamburg player had previously won all three duels with the 24-year-old and never lost a single set.
On Wednesday evening, however, Zverev never found his game: the first serve came far too rarely, the second posed no danger and the German was unable to fend off a break point.
However, Zverev was not the only one who did not meet expectations. The tournament in Toronto already had a few surprises: Russia’s Andrey Rublev, who was number six, lost to the American Mackenzie McDonald (number 59 in the world) 4: 6 and 3: 6 and the Canadian wild card holder Gabriel Diallo (141 of the world) eliminated the British Daniel Evans 7: 6 and 7: 5. Evans recently won the event in Washington.
Raonic rains aces
Cheered on by the home crowd, ex-Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic (545 in the world) made another exclamation mark.
The 32-year-old, who recently returned to the tour following a never-ending odyssey of injuries, defeated the Japanese Taro Daniel (115th in the world) in two sets (6: 4, 6: 3). In round one, Raonic had already defeated top 10 player Frances Tiafoe 6:7, 7:6 and 6:3. The former number three in the world got an incredible 37 aces. 15 more followed once morest Daniel.
Old star Gael Monfils (276 in the world) also caused a surprise. The 36-year-old Frenchman eliminated the number four in the world with Stefanos Tsitsipas (6: 4, 6: 3). Impressive: Monfils celebrated their 350th win on hard court.
