Untreated bacterial cellulitis caused several ailments in the 26-year-old’s body.

In mid-December 2023, Gloria Karina Velásquez Mamani, 27, embarked on a trip to Spain in the hope of fulfilling her dream. However, what began as an international journey full of hope turned into an unexpected nightmare for her, her family, and her loved ones.

The young Peruvian woman was due to arrive in Peru last Tuesday, January 2, however, when she arrived in Colombia, a country where she made a stopover, she was admitted to a clinic in Bogotá due to her deteriorating state of health.

“I was heading to the Jorge Chávez airport to meet her and pick her up, when I received a call from her WhatsApp, but it was not my partner, it was a lady who worked at the Colombia airport. She tells me that Karina is unconscious and that there is no reason for her to take the next flight to Peru,” Jhon Vargas, in love with Velásquez Mamani, told Infobae Perú.

The young Peruvian woman fulfilled her dream of traveling to Spain without thinking that her journey would become a nightmare for her and her loved ones.

Karina, while she was still in Spain, told Jhon that she had developed a bump on her left eyebrow, which she identified as bacterial cellulitis. According to her partner, the young woman did not pay much attention to him, but she told him that she was only going to treat him when he arrived at her house, which is located in the district of San Juan de Miraflores.

“It appears like a pimple, like a mosquito bite. This had already appeared before in mid-2023. First it appeared in the chest and then in other parts of the body. The pimple grows, the area swells, pus begins to come out, while he develops a fever. Here I controlled it with medicine, until it disappeared. Unfortunately, we didn’t think it was going to lead to more, he said.

This type of cellulite appeared once more on December 26, a week before his return to Lima. Over that period of time, the lump grew larger and larger, until it compromised her vision.

“The 31, [la celulitis bacteriana] He was super big, already with fever and pain. [En el vuelo] “He begins to present health problems and this leads to him arriving unconscious at the ‘El Dorado’ airport in Bogotá,” he added.

The airline attendants, upon noticing her state of health, decide to contact the insurance company so that she can be taken to a local clinic. “She was insured for the flight, for the ticket, so that she would be covered on the trip in case of an illness. The insurance company decided to bring her to the Santa Fe Foundation Hospital in Bogotá,” said Vargas.

Gloria Karina Velasquez Mamani has been hospitalized in the ICU of a Colombian medical center since January 2.

While Karina was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – where she is until now – in Peru, Jhon Vargas and the young woman’s mother asked for loans and financial help from her close circle to be able to travel to Bogotá and give her the reach out to your loved one.

“On January 2 we traveled to Colombia. Buying a landscape for an immediate flight is extremely expensive, but we did it. We arrived at 7 at night and ran to see my girlfriend,” commented the couple.

When they arrived at the private health center, they came across a sad image. “It was actually a very hard moment because I found her with the machine that is helping her breathe, intubated, unconscious and with her eye completely swollen,” she lamented.

Karina Velásquez, 26, fulfilled her dream of traveling to Spain without imagining that her international journey would become a nightmare.

According to the diagnosis that the doctors gave him, as a result of this type of cellulitis manifested near the eye, a bacteria, known as Staphylococcus aureus or Golden Staphylococcus, entered his system and compromised several organs, including the brain.

“They told me that he has had a cerebral infarction, which is affecting the entire right side of his body, such as his arm, leg and eyesight. Also the entire system that is responsible for swallowing food, passing saliva and part of breathing,” she indicated.

“The doctor tells me that this bacteria is in the brain, in the blood and also in the lungs,” he said.

Due to all the assistance that the young Peruvian woman is receiving at the Fundación Santa Fe Hospital in Bogotá, the debt amounts to more than 170 thousand soles, and will continue to increase, since just one day in the ICU room is worth 10 thousand soles.

“On Monday [15 de enero] They informed us that, in exchange, we already owed 170 thousand soles. From that amount they already subtracted what was covered by the insurance, which was 25 thousand soles. We don’t know how much longer Karina will have to be here, the doctor who is treating her says that she doesn’t know, that they should wait to see how her body responds to the medications,” she said.

So far, Karina Velásquez owes the hospital 170 thousand soles.

In desperation to get help for Karina Velásquez, her mother and lover have knocked on the door of the Peruvian Embassy in Colombia. However, they did not get the response they expected.

“I went to the Embassy, but they didn’t even open the door for me. They attended to me through their intercom. They told me that they mightn’t do anything, that they didn’t see that issue. Then I went to the Consulate, they treated me there. He gave me certain options to be able to acquire insurance, but that is not of much use to us now,” he told this medium.

“In Peru, his relatives plan to go to the Congress of the Republic and other institutions. In our situation we are trying to look for help in places that one cannot even imagine,” he said.

If you are interested in helping Karina and her family financially, you can do so through the BCP account 191-91548197-0-23. You can send any other type of support to Jhon Vargas (962 013 319).

“The main thing now is for Karina to recover and get out of this, it is what we all want. But we also cannot ignore the great debt we have and which we have to take care of,” she concluded.

Jhon Vargas also explained that he went to the Peruvian consulate, where they explained to him how to get medical insurance. The requirements represent a hurdle for Karina and her family, since she must obtain an immigration card and, therefore, a visa. The period it takes to process these documents is 15 days and they do not guarantee that they will be delivered.
