From the shore, the father watched helplessly as the mighty shark attacked, his son screaming “daddy, save me”, reports the Daily Mail. During the attack, holidaymakers rushed out of the water in horror, yelling at the young man to swim away from the shark before it was chased. In seconds, it was all over.
A boat tried to rescue the man, but to no avail. The beach was closed for two days following the attack. Egypt’s environment ministry confirms the death but does not provide further details of the incident at this time.
An official Russian source said “the victim was not a tourist but a permanent resident of Egypt”. In a video likely showing the incident, shared on social media, a person struggles to escape a shark without success. According to the Egyptian ministry, the animal would have had an “abnormal behavior”.
The Red Sea is a popular destination for divers and other people. Shark attacks are rare here, but there are occasional cases of fatal bites. Last summer, two women were killed in shark attacks. Before that, there were fatal incidents in 2015 and 2018.
