It is also alleged that an unknown liquid was sprayed on the little girl’s face as she screamed “mommy!”.
The video – which was released by a lawyer – has caused shock and outrage across the country.
The alleged attack happened last Tuesday, September 3, the first day of the academic year at the Frères-Voisins school [Αδελφοί-Γείτονες] in the 15th district of the city.
An unidentified teacher is seen standing over the screaming and crying infant before slapping him on the back and causing him to fall to the floor.
Vanessa Edberg, a lawyer representing the parents of the girl who posted the video on Twitter X, said Tuesday: “It was not a hit. He slapped her on the back. What happened is extremely serious.”
It is also alleged the teacher grabbed a small bottle and “sprayed an unidentified product on her face”, Ms Edberg added.
The girl and the rest of her family were “extremely traumatized”, Ms Edberg said, and a complaint has been sent to police and prosecutors.
He said the incident was secretly recorded by the mother of another child, who had been in the classroom all day.
The girl’s father told Le Parisien newspaper: “My daughter had been hit before, so she was having a crisis and the mother who was there decided to discreetly film.”
After taking the hit, the little girl was sent to the corner and continued to scream ‘Mummy!’
After allegedly spraying the liquid, the teacher is heard saying: “There, do you feel good there?”
The teacher also tells the girl: “You’ll see, your dad will come back when I tell him.”
The parents didn’t know about the video at first, but the woman who took it turned it in after two days.
“We went straight to file a complaint,” said the father, who said his son had also been “pushed by this teacher” when he was at school two years ago.
The teacher on Tuesday was said to be “on sick leave” while waiting to be interviewed by law and order authorities, a school spokesman said.
“The teacher has acknowledged the facts and apologized to the family,” the spokesman said.
Aggravated assault on a child under 15 is a criminal offense in France.
Philippe Goujon, the mayor of the 15th arrondissement in Paris, said: “This happened the day after the start of the school year. The teacher was arrested and replaced immediately.”
The school, which has around 200 pupils, is on council estate, he said, adding: “We’re talking about a thousand houses, it’s a tough neighbourhood.”
