Titanic Deterioration! The iconic image of the Titanic wreck is the bow of the ship emerging from the darkness of the Atlantic.
However, a new expedition has revealed the effects of the ruins’ slow deterioration, with a large section of the railing having collapsed onto the seabed.
The disappearance of the railing, depicted by characters Jack and Rose in the famous scene from the film, was discovered during a series of explorations carried out by underwater robots this summer.
The images they managed to capture show how the shipwreck is changing in more than 100 years under the sea.
Deterioration of the Titanic
The ship sank in April 1912 after hitting an iceberg, resulting in the loss of 1,500 lives.
“The bow of the Titanic is just iconic – we have all these moments in popular culture – and that’s what you think of when you think of the shipwreck. And it doesn’t look that way anymore,” said Tomasina Ray, director of collections at RMS Titanic Incthe company that carried out the expedition.
“It’s another warning of the deterioration that is happening every day. People ask all the time: ‘How much longer is the Titanic going to stay there?’ We just don’t know but we are watching it in real time.”
It is not the only part of the ship, which lies at a depth of 3,800 metres, that is being lost to the sea. The metal structure is being eaten away by microbes, which create stalactites of rust.
Previous expeditions have found parts of the Titanic collapsing.
Underwater explorations led by Victor Vescovo in 2019 showed that the officers’ quarters on the starboard side were crumbling, destroying luxury cabins and obstructing distinctive items such as the captain’s bathtub from view.
The expedition of RMS Titanic This summer’s Inc took place during July and August.
Two remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) captured more than two million images and 24 hours of high-resolution video of both the wreck, which broke in two when it sank, leaving its bow and stern separated by 800 metres, and the debris field surrounding it.
The company is now carefully analyzing the video to catalog the discoveries and ultimately create a highly detailed 3D digital scan of the entire site.
In 1986, a bronze statuette named Diana of Versailles was spotted and photographed by Robert Ballard, the explorer who had found the wreck of the Titanic the previous year.
But its location was unknown and the 60-centimetre-long figurine was never documented again. Now, however, it has been discovered lying face-up in the sediment of the debris field.
RMS Titanic Inc. has the salvage rights to the Titanic and is the only company legally allowed to remove items from the wreck.
Over the years, the company has recovered thousands of items from the debris field, a selection of which it has displayed around the world.
They plan to return next year to recover more, and the statue of Diana is one of the objects they would like to bring back to the surface.
However, some believe that the shipwreck is a cemetery and should be kept intact, but Penca thinks differently.
“The rediscovery of the Diana statue is the perfect argument against leaving the Titanic alone.”
“It’s a piece of art that was meant to be seen and appreciated. And now this beautiful art object is sitting at the bottom of the ocean… and the absolute darkness where it has been for 112 years,” he noted.
