Although they are old, the facts mentioned this Wednesday morning before the Dinant criminal court remain no less appalling. On March 2, 2014 in Somme-Leuze, a mother born in 1979 attempted to kill her three children by electrocuting them. How ? By deliberately dropping a hairdryer in the bathtub while the little ones were taking a bath together.
She had previously asked the eldest, aged 6, what would happen if she dropped this hairdryer in the water. “We are going to die,” the child replied. She also used an electric extension to reach the bathtub. Proof that the facts were premeditated.
Fortunately, the electrical installation responded well. The seals blew, which made it possible to avoid a family tragedy. After committing these acts, the mother attempted suicide by taking medication even though she had consumed cocaine and alcohol the day before. She remained in a coma for five days.
“Deliver my children from this secret”
The courts would never have learned of this affair if the main person concerned had not herself denounced her actions in a letter in 2016. “My partner at the time wanted to cover up this affair. I wanted to free my children from this secret. It was too heavy for me to bear and I wanted them to be able to express themselves,” she said this Wednesday before the Dinant criminal court. “Being here in court, I need it. ”
The defense did not dwell on this scene of March 2, 2014 but wanted to recall the journey of the defendant who had already made several suicide attempts. “The first dates back to 2006 following the separation from the father of two of the children. In 2008, she began a new, explosive relationship with another man. She started using cocaine, drinking and taking antidepressants. She made three more suicide attempts in 2015 and 2016, the year in which she ended this relationship and denounced the facts. Since then, she has carried out important work on herself and which we cannot ignore,” pleads Me Leclère.
Today, the eldest no longer speaks to his mother. The other son suffers from psychological disorders perhaps linked to the acts committed. On the other hand, the relationship with his daughter is peaceful. “In any case, the worst sentence she will have is that of her children,” concludes Me Leclère, who pleads for a suspension of the sentence. Judgment on December 6.
