Days after the news spread of her awakening inside the casket during her funeral, a 76-year-old Ecuadorian woman died, after spending 7 days in intensive care.
According to the British newspaper, The Guardian, the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health confirmed in a statement that Bella Montoya had died of a stroke after spending a week in intensive care.
It added that Montoya was kept under “permanent monitoring”, but did not provide further information on the medical investigation surrounding the case.
A few days ago, Montoya surprised the mourners of her body, by knocking on her coffin after she woke up from a coma for five hours, despite her death being announced in a hospital in Ecuador, which prompted the government to conduct an urgent investigation into the case.

“There were about 20 of us there,” her son said. “After about five hours in the coffin, the coffin started making noises. My mother was wrapped in sheets and banging on the coffin, and when we got closer we saw that she was breathing heavily.”
He added that his relatives had taken his mother to hospital in the central city of Papahoyo, where the health minister said she was in intensive care and was breathing through a tube, and doctors had given up hope that she would survive for a long time.
The Health Ministry said it was investigating the doctors involved in her case, and a technical committee had been set up to review how the hospital issued the death certificate.
