Shock in Las Vegas with suicide of a 12-year-old girl. The teenager received a horrible reception bulluing at her school, according to her family, which claims the Las Vegas school district denied their request to transfer their daughter to another school.
Flora Martinez, a sixth grader at Duane D. Keller Middle School, took her own life on May 7th. “Look how hard it was for my daughter. My daughter was literally bullied to death,” the 12-year-old’s mother, Alice Martinez, told 8 News Now Thursday.
Alice and Joshua Parker, Flora’s father, blamed the Clark County school district and said officials failed to protect their little girl. Flora’s family said they reported the girl’s ordeal to the school’s assistant principal, but the bullying by her classmates continued.
The bullies targeted little Flora almost from the start of the 2023-24 academic year, Alice said.
A request to change schools was denied
It was so serious that Alice Martinez filed a request to transfer Flora to another high school, a request that CCSD reportedly denied on Oct. 6, 2023. The district did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
“At that point in time, the girl had already been out of school for two weeks because of all the incidents,” Martinez said. The bullying intensified when Flora returned to the classroom, and she gradually ceased to be the girl she once was, full of life and compassion.
“It wasn’t an isolated incident that happened and she decided to take her own life. It was piled up, he was bullied for months, and finally, he just mightn’t take it anymore,” Joshua Parker said.
No one knows why the girl became the target of bullies, with her former classmate Rico telling the paper that Flora was “so good to everyone”. “I’m so sad because I felt it was my fault, I really should have done something. I should have stopped them all,” said the child.
According to her family, Flora was tortured until she killed herself in her bedroom – just before she had dinner with her family.
I blame her parents
Devastated, the 12-year-old’s parents accused the authorities of doing nothing to protect their little girl. “I feel the school had a duty to keep her safe. They were in their care and they just failed miserably,” said her mother Alice Martinez.
“Everybody involved in this request to transfer her failed… If you’re a parent and you’re not outraged by this, you’re part of the problem.”
Little Flora took her own life just two days following 10-year-old Sammy Teusch in Indiana suffered the same fate, also following a severe episode of bullying. The 10-year-old took his own life on May 5 following being horribly bullied by classmates who made fun of him because of his glasses and teeth. In fact, according to his family, the child was being bullied until the day he ended his life.
