Guayaquil.-The 20-year-old goalkeeper Justin Cornejo, third in the squad of the Ecuadorian club Barcelona, died in circumstances that have not been clarified a few hours following being admitted to the Panamericana clinic in critical condition, reported the entity from the city of Guayaquil.
Cornejo, 20, trained normally until Monday with his teammates in preparation for the match once morest Brazilian side Bragantino for a place in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana.
He was part of the first team of the Ídolo del Astillero since 2022 despite his youth. From there he served as the third goalkeeper despite being 18 years old at the time.
He was also the goalkeeper and captain of the club’s Under 20 team. He was not normally called up to matches as Javier Burrai was always selected as a starter and Víctor Mendoza as a substitute. However, he trained with the first team, which is why he was part of it and his sudden death was a hard blow for everyone.

Barcelona released a statement today announcing that Cornejo “has been hospitalised since yesterday, in a critical condition.” It added that “in respect of the privacy of his family, no further details will be provided at this time.”
The club did not specify the cause of the young goalkeeper’s death. Local journalists who cover Barcelona’s training sessions reported that the goalkeeper suffered a serious fall in the bathroom of his house and a severe blow to the head.
