Terrible scenes in Vienna!
Austria’s ex-national player Volkan Kahraman (43/three international matches) was shot in the head on a street on Wednesday.
According to the police, a dispute between Kahraman and an acquaintance escalated following a visit to a café in the Simmering district.
The 46-year-old acquaintance then pulled a gun, shot Kahraman and then himself.
The trigger is said to have been a dispute regarding a woman.
Former clubs of the former midfielder have also said goodbye. Austria Wien tweeted: “Rest in peace, Volkan.”
The Austro-Turk was considered one of the greatest Austrian talents. At the age of 15 he moved to Holland. Played for Feyenoord Rotterdam and Excelsior. After a brief detour to Turkey, Kahraman returned to Austria. Promoted to the Bundesliga in 2002 with ASKÖ Pasching.
He made his debut for the national team in August of the same year. The footballer celebrated his greatest sporting success in 2003 – the championship with Austria Vienna.
He ended his active career with lower-class clubs. He then took on coaching jobs, most recently at Stadtliga Ostbahn XI.
