The cosmetics chain Lush is known for its commitment to LGBTIQ rights. For Lush, the current situation is as dangerous as any shitstorm, even if they have previously shown themselves to be liberal when it comes to LGBTIQ rights, says Tanja Hollenstein, brand expert at the consulting firm Riverside. In such an inhumane conflict, such an evasive response is not ethically justifiable and will inevitably reflect negatively on the company.
Lush is not only threatened with a drop in sales. Physical attacks by outraged people on Lush stores are also possible, as was the case at H&M in South Africa, when an motif that was perceived as racist turned violent.
The company must now take responsibility. Under no circumstances might you place the blame on an individual employee. «The company is also responsible for statements made by employees when they communicate on site or on company media. Behavior should therefore always be part of the corporate culture,” says Hollenstein.
