What is considered a delicacy for many causes red heads for others. So David Beckham reaps a shitstorm because he eats sea urchins during his vacation in Croatia.
Relaxed soccer legend David Beckham (47) sails with daughter Harper (11) on a boat, which his wife Victoria (48) shows her 30 million Instagram followers. She writes: “Kisses from Croatia.” But the Briton doesn’t just enjoy the holidays with his offspring. For lunch he gets raw sea urchins and a glass of white wine.
What many consider a sea delicacy has animal rights activists furious. Because sea urchins are endangered by the extreme overfishing in stocks. The animal rights activists appeal to the common sense of the gourmets who leave the animals where they belong: in the sea.
“Why do you kill sea urchins?”
Accordingly, Victoria’s fans also react to the Instagram photo. “Sea urchins would live to be over 100 years old, but then the Beckhams came to Croatia…” screams a follower. Another asks, “Why do you kill sea urchins?”
Another thinks that the authorities must be informed so that this is prohibited, as is the case with the exception of Sardinia. For the last ten years they have been brought from the 1850 km long Sardinian coast because of their sweet and fishy fruit. The longer, the more restaurants are doing without menus with such as the typical “pasta ai ricci” – spaghetti with sea urchins.
Another Beckham commentator writes: “These few will do no harm. The problem is when tourists eat pen shells and starfish. Let them enjoy the sea urchins.”
