Shipwreck in Italy
The sinking occurred at 05:00 local time (03:00 GMT). According to witnesses, the sailing ship, named ‘Bayesian’ and flying a British flag, was anchored off the port of Porticello when a strong tornado hit the area, breaking the main mast. This would have caused the boat to become unbalanced, which ended up capsizing and sinking.
The 15 survivors, a mother and her one-year-old daughter, were taken to the Children’s Hospital in Palermo for evaluation. The father was admitted to another hospital in the Sicilian capital, while five other passengers were treated in an outpatient clinic.
British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter are among six tourists missing after the sailing ship ‘Bayesian’ sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday, authorities in Sicily have announced.
The director general of Civil Protection in Sicily, Salvatore Cocina, said that they hope to obtain results from the rescue operations between tonight and tomorrow.
