Shipwreck: Atlanta found in US sea 130 years after sinking

Watch the video: Only two sailors survived – Shipwreck found in US seas 130 years following sinking.

An incredible discovery at 200 meters depth:

The organization “Shipwreck Society” has found the wreck of the “Atlanta”.

The undiscovered shipwreck lay in Lake Superior for 130 years.

In the summer of 2021, the researchers will come across the special find 56 kilometers from Deer Park.

Due to the cold water the wreck is in good condition.

“It is rare that we find a shipwreck that shows so clearly what it is,” Brucy Lynn, Executive Director GLSHS.

Searching for shipwrecks is tedious work.

The researchers searched more than 4,000 kilometers last year.

And the work paid off:

“It’s really artistic and still beautiful following 130 years at the bottom of the lake,” Darryl Ertel, Director of Marine Operations GLSHS.

But what happened 130 years ago?

The “Atlanta” sinks on May 4, 1891.

The coal-laden ship was sailing on Lake Superior between Canada and the United States when it was caught in a northwest storm.

The strong storm causes the tow line to tear – without sails, the “Atlanta” is at the mercy of the sea.

The crew manages to get into the lifeboat.

But when trying to come ashore, the boat tips over.
