A new Chinese show of strength has begun around Japan. Between Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th, Beijing’s ships and warplanes created havoc and attracted the response of Tokyo’s self-defense forces. During the course of Saturday, a Chinese navy frigate and an offshore bunker rounded the Tsushima Strait and headed north-east, into the waters of the Sea of Japan, followed, following a few hours, by a destroyer. But that’s not all because, as reported by Il Giornale, other Chinese naval units were spotted in transit between Taiwan and the Senkaku Islands in the Presidential Days. The Japanese Ministry of Defense then announced that the military air force was engaged in the same days in take-offs on alert to intercept intruding aircraft above the waters of the East China Sea.
Meanwhile, according to one of the latest analyses, the Japanese government’s true consensus remains very low. Although up slightly by 1.1% compared to the previous reading in February, popular support for the incumbent government led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida still remains at 18%. This is the result of the latest polls released by local media. This is the third lowest point recorded since the government took office in October 2021, and for the eighth consecutive month below the key threshold of 30%, traditionally a sign of an imminent governability crisis.
