Shipments of Apple’s VR glasses may not exceed 100,000, says rumor

Update (05/24/2023) – HA

As high cost of production and sale, Apple’s long-awaited mixed-reality headset should initially be restricted to commercial use by developers. That’s estimated not only by price, but also by the modest shipment being predicted by Taiwanese research firm TrendForce.

Apple’s VR debut should be made up of selling 100,000 units. Trendforce predicts that shipments of the new headset will now “fall short” of that number this year, with Apple potentially limiting production to no more than 300 thousand units.

The trajectory of this amount has changed dramatically over the device’s manufacturing timeline. In January 2022, inside sources indicate that the company told suppliers that 7 to 10 million units would be sold in the launch year. Then the number dropped to 3 million.

Last August, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple planned to sell no more than 1.5 million units in 2023. Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman recently said that Apple now expects to sell around 900,000 headphones this year. In December last year, Kuo revised its estimate to “less than 500,000 units”.

Gurman also posited that Apple can only sell one headphone per day per retail store, which would equate to annual sales of just over 180,000 units.

Therefore, so far, TrendForce is the company that has analyzed the launch in the most pessimistic way (and only time will tell if it is realistic).

This matches reports from industry insiders, who have already indicated that Apple should launch a more affordable version of its VR glasses only in 2025.

Although it is difficult to indicate a price, the total estimated value indicates that the first virtual reality headset from Apple can be sold for less than US$ 3,000 contrary to what was previously estimated. Either way, we’ll have to wait until WWDC 2023 to find out more, as more details regarding the device are expected to be revealed at this event.
