DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A ship was attacked Friday at sea off the coast of Yemen in unclear circumstances, a British military organization said.

The attack occurred off Nishtun, Yemen, in the far east of the country near the border with Oman, said Britain’s Maritime Trade Operations, part of the British armed forces.

Shots were fired at an unidentified ship being pursued three boats later in the Gulf of Aden, it added.

No additional information was available at this time.

There have been incidents in the waters off Yemen before, although Nishtun is controlled by forces allied to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which is supported by a Saudi-led coalition.

The Gulf of Aden is a crucial route for global trade and has seen attacks attributed to Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, which is the scene of a civil war.

The Somali pirate attacks that once plagued the region have been largely eradicated in recent years.

However, attacks have occurred in the area before. In December 2020, a cargo ship was the target of a mysterious attack off Nishtun. Sea mines and boats equipped with bomb drones have been used in the Yemen war.

The attack came following Iran in a separate incident captured an oil tanker on Thursday carrying crude oil for Chevron Corp. as it headed for Houston.
