Léane Labrèche-Dor has long been annoyed at being compared to her famous father, Marc Labrèche. Aware that her family ties might constitute “a double-edged sword”, the actress even had to make difficult choices to avoid being associated with her father. Today, when she has made her place in the Quebec artistic community, the 35-year-old actress has made peace with her hereditary background.

“I made my way, I did my classes and I changed my mentality regarding it, she confides in an interview with the Journal on the occasion of the release of the film my mother’s menof which she is the star.
“When I started in my professional life, there was really a desire to detach myself from my father. I knew that no matter what I did, there would always be 50% of people who would say that I had obtained such and such a role because Marc Labrèche is my father. But today, I let go and I allow myself to have more fun. »
From laughter to tears
Proof of this letting go: Léane Labrèche-Dor recently agreed to play alongside her father, her grandmother (Michelle Labrèche-Larouche) and her spouse (Mickaël Gouin) in the family parody “Les Labrèshian”, presented earlier this year as part of the program I am coming to you, moderated by Marc Labrèche. To his surprise, this series of very short sketches was a hit with viewers.
“It’s the kind of madness that, when you do it, you never know if it’s going to be well received,” she observes. But people find it funny. At the same time, it’s completely silly. Looks don’t make sense! And my grandma, wow, bring out the Gemini! I would give him all the awards in the world for his performance in this! »
In the years following her graduation from the National Theater School (in 2012), Léane Labrèche-Dor often distinguished herself in comic roles, notably in the humorous program SNL Quebecwhich revealed it to the general public in 2014, and the series Squad 99Quebec adaptation of the American sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Ninebroadcast on Club illico in 2020.
But in recent years, filmmakers have increasingly called on his services for his versatility and his ability to also evolve in a dramatic register.
This is particularly the case of the director Anik Jean, who offered him the main role of his first feature film, my mother’s men, which opens August 4. Léane Labrèche-Dor plays Elsie, a young woman in her early thirties who receives an unexpected inheritance from her eccentric mother: the mission to reconnect with her five ex-husbands.
Anik Jean was already friends with Léane Labrèche-Dor when she offered him the lead role in her film. This is the actress’ performance in the drama The laughreleased in 2020, which convinced her of the extent of her playing palette.
“Today, I can’t imagine the film without Léane,” says Anik Jean.
“She carried the film on her shoulders like a warrior. Léane, for me, she is such a strong woman and I say that because I know her on many levels. But in cinema and in acting, she is an actress who has a very broad range, great generosity and great listening with other actors. It’s easy to work with her. She’s a wicked big talent, that girl. »
Quickly, reading the script of the my mother’s men (written by Maryse Latendresse), Léane Labrèche-Dor targeted several elements that allowed her to relate to the character of Elsie. Like the fact that she too lost her mother at a young age [elle avait 16 ans quand sa mère, Fabienne Dor, a succombé à un cancer, NDLR].
“It certainly helped me to make emotional paths to interpret the character”, indicates the actress regarding this common point with the heroine of the film.
“I think it allowed me to arrive with a small baggage of emotions and a vision of what this mourning represents. I don’t think it was necessary to have lost your mother to play that role. There are exceptional actresses who might have played him better than me. But there is something unique regarding the way I proposed to approach the mourning of this girl and her energy, which was very close to me. »

In the big leagues
On the film set of my mother’s menLéane Labrèche-Dor also had the chance to give the reply to several renowned actors, including Colm Feore, Marc Messier, Patrick Huard and Anne-Marie Cadieux.
“It was super intimidating because they are gaming monuments,” she says. It was like a game lesson every day. What I found beautiful regarding it is that it allowed me to learn with actors who have completely different acting styles.
“But it took a while for me to stop being intimidated…I felt small in my shorts next to them!” Colm Feore is the greatest Shakespearean actor in Canada. He is monumental on stage. When he arrived on set, I was like a 10-year-old girl. I mightn’t look him in the eye. »

A lot of
YOUR FIRST MEMORY AT THE CINEMA?
“I remember going to see toy story when I was little. But the first time I really freaked out regarding movies was when I saw red Mill. It was the first time that I had seen a film and said to myself: wow, this is so wonderful, what an exceptional medium! And then followed several years of “kick” on Ewan McGregor…”
YOUR LAST FAVORITE?
“I know it came out a year ago, but I really liked it Arsenault and son. There is also The plunger which I loved even if I didn’t see it in theaters. »
A FILMAST YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH?
“Luc Picard! I still haven’t recovered from L’audition. I find it a masterpiece. There is something I like regarding Luc’s sensitivity. It is super fragile and yet it is a rock. He is an artist who interests me a lot. Otherwise, there are several other filmmakers with whom I would like to work one day, such as Robin Aubert, Louis Bélanger, Chloé Robichaud and Sophie Dupuis, to name a few. »
