Shining a Light on Neglected Crises: From Gaza to Sudan and Beyond

Conflicts are not forgotten because of Gaza“, immediately tempers Donatella Rovera, investigator on crises and conflicts for Amnesty International, an NGO which promotes the defense of human rights in the world. “Before working on the conflict in Gaza, I worked on the Sudan. This is the conflict that has displaced the most people in 2023. Yet there was very little talk regarding it, even before October 7“, she points out.

Other contexts that we talk regarding very little, there are many. There are way too many. The problem is that we talk regarding conflicts, but not regarding the conditions in which the people affected live“, agrees Douchka van Olphen, Public Positioning Manager at MSF Belgium, mentioning in particular Haitithe Sudanthe Central African Republicthe Yemen or even the Burma.

Forgetting induces a form of disempowerment.

Rather than “forgotten crises”, Doctors Without Borders prefers to speak of “neglected crises”. “If these crises do not receive the attention they should, they are not forgotten by the international community,” estime Douchka van Olphen. “The lack of attention to these so-called forgotten contexts is a consequence of conscious choices. Forgetting induces a form of disempowerment, an involuntary act. But this is not the case. We must tirelessly put these crises back in the spotlight and their populations in vulnerable situations who do not deserve to be neglected and who, on the contrary, require urgent and coordinated action from the international community and humanitarian NGOs”.

According to the MSF representative, another common point of these crises lies in the multiplicity of problems. Threat of epidemics, difficulties in accessing water, food, healthcare and security threats often combine in overcrowded refugee camps.
