Women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and singles all passed first place in the group… South Korea Secures All 6 Tickets for Doubles
Shin Yu-bin (Korean Air), who returned from injury, swept all three tickets to the 2023 Durban Individual World Championships.
In the preliminary round for the World Championships held in Doha, Qatar on the 10th, Shin Yoo-bin paired up with Jeon Ji-hee (Mirae Asset Securities) and won first place in the group in the women’s doubles event, earning the right to advance to the finals.
While the first place in the group tournament is given the right to advance to the finals, Shin Yu-bin and Jeon Ji-hee won 4-0 over India’s Srija Akula-Leet Tennyson in their last game.
In the mixed doubles, Shin Yu-bin teamed up with Lim Jong-hoon (KGC Ginseng Corporation) and defeated Kazakhstani players 4-0 to secure the right to advance to the finals.
Following this, Yubin Shin (19th) defeated Orawan Paranang (113th, above singles ranking) of Thailand 4-3 in the singles that took place that day and won her 3rd qualifying ticket to the finals.
With this, Shin Yu-bin obtained all the tickets to the finals that he might win in this preliminary round.
Shin Yu-bin, who was unable to show her skills last year due to a wrist injury, raised expectations by achieving 100% of her goal in the first international competition of the new year.
The national team secured all 6 World Championship doubles berths, including 2 where Shin Yu-bin collaborated with other players.
In the men’s doubles, Jang Woo-jin (Army Sports Corps)-Lim Jong-hoon pair and Lee Sang-soo-Cho Dae-seong (Samsung Life Insurance) pair will step on the world championship stage.
Jang Woo-jin and Lim Jong-hoon, who won the silver medal in the men’s doubles at the 2021 Houston Games, took the opportunity to challenge for the gold medal in two years.
In women’s doubles, Shin Yu-bin and Jeon Ji-hee, along with Choi Hyo-joo (Korea Racing Association) and Lee Si-on (Samsung Life Insurance), will compete in the world championships.
In the mixed doubles, the ‘promising combination’, Cho Dae-seong (Samsung Life Insurance) and Kim Na-young (POSCO International), together with Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin, won a ticket to the finals.
In the women’s singles preliminaries held that day, Jeon Ji-hee won the right to advance to the finals following Shin Yu-bin, while Choi Hyo-joo, Seo Hyo-won (Korea Racing Association), and Lee Si-on (Samsung Life Insurance) were pushed to second place.
The second-place players will play a loser’s respawn match from the 11th to determine the final ranking, and then decide whether or not to go to Durban in the order of performance according to the Asian quota distributed by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
