Shin Bet and Israeli Police: Tel Aviv Explosion a “Terrorist Act”

The joint statement said that after the initial investigation, “it can be said that this was a terrorist attack, with a powerful explosive device being detonated, which led to the death of the suicide bomber, while another man in the area was moderately injured by the explosion.”

He stressed that “the Tel Aviv bombing was an offensive operation in which a highly explosive device was used,” calling on “citizens to be vigilant, cautious, and to report any suspicious person or object.”

The General Security Service is still working to identify the man who was killed while carrying the bomb in his backpack.

Kan news channel reported that he is believed to be a Palestinian from the West Bank.

The Israeli security service had previously suggested that the explosion was a “failed attempt” to carry out a bombing operation.

A senior police officer told Israel’s Channel 12 on Monday that “the operation was prevented by 99%,” and that estimates are that “the person killed in the explosion and who was carrying the explosives came from Nablus in the northern West Bank.”

The officer added, “Miraculously, the explosion did not occur in a nearby synagogue or in a nearby shopping mall, and this event could have ended with dozens of deaths.”

According to the channel, “The last time an unusual and unclear explosion occurred in Tel Aviv, and it was suspected at the time that it was a failed operation, was on September 15 of last year. The explosion occurred at that time in the Yarkon Park, and a gag order was imposed on it as well.”
