Malayalee footballer Shilji Shaji scored a hat-trick as India started with a win in the Under-17 SAF Women’s Championship. In the first match of the tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh, India defeated defending champions Nepal by four goals to one. Apart from Shilji, Pooja also scored a goal at the BSSS Mostafa Kamal Stadium. Barsha Oli scored Nepal’s consolation goal. Shilji Shaji scored a hat-trick in SAFF U-17 Women’s Championship
Shilji is a player from the academy of Gokulam Kerala FC. This Kozhikode native of Kakkayam is a player who has found his place in Kerala football in the last few seasons. The player scored eight goals in two matches against Jordan last month. There is another Malayali presence in the middle of the team. Akhila Rajan is a native of Palakkad Peringotukurissy. Akhila also made it to the national team from Gokulam Kerala’s academy. Priya PV, a former coach of Gokulam Kerala FC’s women’s football team, is currently the coach of the U-17 women’s national team.
Along with India and Nepal, teams from Bangladesh and Bhutan are also participating in the tournament, as well as a special invitee currently, the Russian team. India’s next match is against Bangladesh on March 24.
