Shikhar Dhawan’s Comeback: The Road to the ODI World Cup and Asian Games

Bengaluru: The 37-year-old Shikhar Dhawan was not named when the squad was announced, although he was expected to captain the Indian men’s cricket team for the Asian Games. Earlier reports said that under the leadership of Dhawan, the youth team will be sent to the Games in China. A new report says that those who thought that Dhawan’s international career was over following not being named in the Asian Games squad were wrong.

Currently, Shikhar Dhawan is not playing for Team India in all the three formats. Dhawan, who was out of the Test team by 2018, played his last ODI on 10 December 2022 and his last T20I on 29 July 2021. But with the ODI World Cup coming, Dhawan’s hopes are blooming once more. Despite not being part of the national team, Dhawan is currently undergoing training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Dhawan shared pictures and videos of training at NCA on his social media accounts. Malayali star Sanju Samson, spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, pacer Umran Malik and others are also in the National Cricket Academy.

Many see the training at the NCA as a sign that Shikhar Dhawan, who is still on a C-grade contract despite being out of Team India for months, is in the ODI World Cup plans. Dhawan may be seen as a back-up opener in the ODI World Cup, which India will host. Shikhar Dhawan has the best record in ICC events. Ishan Kishan, currently the only left-handed specialist batsman in the Indian team, has not returned to form following his double century once morest Bangladesh, increasing Dhawan’s chances. As Ruturaj Gaekwad and Yashaswi Jaiswal are participating in the Asian Games which will be held at the same time as the World Cup, it is likely that Ishan Kishan will be the third opener along with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill and Dhawan will be the reserve player.
