The story of Sudarshan Patnaik, who gained worldwide fame by creating masterpieces of sand art on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, has its ups and downs.
Sudarshan’s childhood was spent cooking fake dishes in other people’s houses and making small works of art on the beach. After years of hard work and struggle under the shadow of difficulties, he has now become a world-renowned sand artist.
Sudarshan Patnaik has been awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award for his mastery of the art of sand sculpting.
He explains that ‘I was a young labourer, I used to work in my neighbour’s house. I was very interested in drawing and painting. I had no money, the distance from the beach to the house was five minutes. So I got a canvas right here. So I started sculpting here on the sand with my fingers.
“After making something here, I was happy when some tourists saw and appreciated it. I thought that I work all day but no one thinks good of me, but here people appreciate my work. So that made me even more interested.’

According to Sudarshan Patnaik: ‘Sand art was neglected in India for a long time. Even in our country, people were not ready to accept this art. Sand was everywhere. The sea was everywhere. But people thought what was the point of making it, it would break immediately. It took a long time to realize how great art this is.
‘When the Government of India awarded me the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth highest civilian award, people realized there was something in this art. A little awareness was created among the youth regarding this art.’
Sudarshan admits that the sand art trend has grown rapidly in Asian countries.
He said, ‘I see that there are a large number of artists in Bangladesh and Pakistan who are creating sand art, there were not so many before. India is a big country, I saw that there are sand artists in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar.’
