Shiffrin likes the wildcard rule: “Cool move”

The US superstar is looking forward to Marcel Hirscher‘s comeback with excitement. The fact that her compatriot Lindsey Vonn is rumored to want to race again also makes Shiffrin’s eyes wide. The Swiss newspaper Blick had reported that the soon-to-be 40-year-old Vonn wanted to compete as a forerunner at the World Cup races in Beaver Creek in December. If she notices that her form is right, then she would like to take part in races again, it was said.

Shiffrin commented on the speculation that she didn’t know any more about it than anyone else. However, if Vonn is serious about it despite her knee replacement, “then it must be a sign that her knee is doing a lot better. It’s been a really long time since she’s been able to live her life without severe pain. So that’s really positive for her her, and I wish her the best.” There will be no upcoming duel between the two US stars. “I will do more Super-G this season, but no downhill,” announced Shiffrin.

Before the start of the new season, the world association FIS introduced the wildcard rule, making it easier for former alpine stars to make a comeback. You then no longer have to collect points in lower-class races in order to be able to compete in the World Cup, but can instead apply for wild cards. And can start comparatively early with start number 31. The eight-time overall World Cup winner Hirscher, who is aiming for a comeback for the Netherlands, plans to take advantage of this opportunity.

“When you’re done, you’re done”

The best skier of today is looking forward to his venture with excitement. “I’m fascinated by it. What’s going to happen? I don’t know. I’m very excited,” Shiffrin said. If she could choose, she would also like to have “legends” like Marlies Raich and Tina Maze back in the World Cup, Shiffrin answered a question. “I would love it, but I get it.”

She herself currently does not assume that a wildcard will ever be issued for her. “I can’t imagine coming back in five or 10 years when I’m retired. I can’t get myself into that mindset. When you’re done, you’re done.”
