Sherbrooke | Nurses sit-in in the Fleurimont Hospital operating room

Faced with the repercussions of a staffing shortage, nurses began a sit-inThursday morning, in the operating room of the Fleurimont Hospital, in Estrie.

After discussing “for at least three hours” with the demonstrators, without reaching an agreement, the management went to the Administrative Labor Tribunal.

“We could no longer tolerate this illegal work stoppage continuing,” said Yann Belzile, director of human resources, communications and legal affairs at the CIUSSS de l’Estrie, during a press conference in the middle of ‘afternoon.

The substance of the dispute relates to the “gift of custody”, namely the possibility of transferring one’s custody outside normal working hours to a colleague.

Mr. Belzile explains that the management, in the morning, wanted to put an end to this practice, because there is “a minority of employees who do a lot of these guards” and that this causes exhaustion and distress in them.

Other employees therefore protested against this management decision.

As for patients, the Hospital is reassuring and indicates that all urgent surgeries have been maintained, even if it is the operating room that is affected by this means of pressure.

As for elective surgeries, some had to be postponed, due to the context. If necessary, the people affected were contacted by telephone.

The FIQ Healthcare Professionals’ Union and the hospital management are now awaiting the decision of the Administrative Labor Tribunal.
