The Welsh Quartet Shell keeps the suboptimal name that can be found online, but changes its direction behind a great artwork on the paradoxically titled second EP The Need to Separate from the grungy post hardcore path to the popular doomgaze.
A stylistic readjustment to a basis that has long since become a trend from nostalgia. Which is why fans of Fleshwater, Hum, Big Garden, Spotlights and more than anything else The mane (to name just a few like-minded people with more heaviness under the shoegaze guiding star Slowdive sailing) Shell Also definitely worth keeping on your radar!
The foursome hardly does anything wrong here – they act out The Need to Separate However, it is not very original and does practically nothing to set itself apart from the references mentioned in any way. Yes, in the weaker phases, the entertaining, never boring 20 minutes of the EP sound like a redundant but competent echo Omit (2022). The formulaic game from the reverb-heavy genre construction kit Shell but simply, they are convincing not only aesthetically, but also in terms of songwriting behind the introductory one Intro In Your Head above average solid.
Close Your Eyes cannot be brought regarding by a more aggressive introduction and associative indulgence Give Yourself Away is more energetically interesting due to its straight line, while Cold Hand With its melodic, calm, slow and dreamy approach, it represents the well-deserved centerpiece of the record even beyond the dynamics. The powerful groove of D.I.A.D. as well as the elegiac Separate with its solid body and nebulous aura underline this, but are not really reasons to choose this in the first instance instead of the original eclectics.
As a methadone program, this makes it generically convincing The Need to Separate but definitely want more – both in terms of the basic development and further material from the Welsh.
