Sheep producers await the Maquinchao Livestock Expo with great optimism

With great optimism sheep producers are preparing to live the XIII edition of the Southern Region Livestock Exhibition that will take place between February 23 and 15 in Maquinchao.

The event will once once more bring together apSheep producers of the Merino breed from different Patagonian provinces and from Buenos Aires, who will show the advances made in genetics to continue improving the breed and contributing to the growth of sheep farming, the main economic activity of the Southern Region of Rio Negro.

“There is a lot of optimism for this new exhibition. We are lucky to be in an area that is purely sheep and where the Merino breed is raised. AND the producer from Maquinchao and the area likes to have quality. That is why it is permanently betting on the field and improving production,” said the producer and president of the Rural Society of Maquinchao, Héctor “Beto” Zamborain.

This organization, together with the Ministry of Production and Agroindustry of Río Negro, which contributed $1,000,000, and the local municipality is responsible for organizing this event, which also has the support of the Sheep Law, the Argentine Association of Merino Breeders , the Entity for the Development of the Southern Region, SENASA and the Federation of Rural Societies of Rio.

Zemborain highlighted the importance of time during 2022, noting that the good and distributed rains and snowfalls that were recorded had a favorable impact on production. “This harvest we had very good wools and also high percentages of signaling. In 2022 we had rain every month and snowfall in winter, which favored natural forage and water. The animals present a good body condition. We peasants are very hopeful. Despite the bad things we had to experience in previous years, The present is very good and that makes us very optimistic to continue betting on the field “ he affirmed and hoped to be able to achieve in this new sample the same success as in the previous edition. “Last year it was the best exhibition in Patagonia in terms of sales. We had a record for animal sales. All those who entered the exhibition sold. Hopefully this year the same will happen.”

The exhibition will have male and female reproducers of the merino breed in the “pure”, “pedigree pure”, “registered pure”, “multipurpose merino” and general majada categories.

Twenty-one herds from Río Negro, Chubut and Buenos Aires were registered with a total of 296 animals.

On Thursday the 23rd the exhibition will begin with the entrance and admission of the animals to the fairgrounds. The jura will take place on Friday and there will be a camaraderie dinner with a musical show to entertain 100 producers and authorities. During this day, the semifinal instances of the First Rionegrina Empanada Contest, whose objective is to promote sheep meat. The South Region is the area where the largest sheep production is concentrated, with a strong Río Negro identity and roots in its inhabitants. The auctions will take place on Saturday. In the 2022 edition, 20 cabins with 311 animals participated. It was auctioned for a sum of $6,520,000 and the largest rural exhibition of sheep sales in Patagonia.

“Soft” financing for the purchase of reproducers

As happens every year, those producers who do not register non-compliance in credits granted by the Government of the Río Negro Province in previous livestock exhibitions, through the Sheep Law, the Goat Law, the Bovine Livestock Program or other current provincial or national plans, they will be able to access “soft” financing for the purchase of reproducers.

Within the framework of Operation 2023, the Ministry of Production and Agroindustry makes available to farmers, whose establishments are located in the province of Río Negro, three credit lines at nominal value for the purchase of reproducers and wombs.
