According to the results of the epidemiological investigation and the laboratory results, a large-scale veterinary operation for sheep and goat plague is being created for the second time in a few days, this time in the Region of Western Greece.

The specific operation, which is being developed following the order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Costas Tsiaras and coordinated by the Secretary General of the Ministry, Giorgos Stratakos, is expected to be larger than the one in Thessaly.

Veterinarians, as well as geotechnicians of other specialties, are already working in the field in the PE of Etoloakarnania and PE of Ilia, who constantly arrive from all over Greece, at the two centers of operations, based in Pyrgos and Agrinio.

As stated in a related announcement, the aim is to immediately check 2,504 livestock farms and 436,500 goats and sheep, which live in the protection and surveillance zones, which have already been defined, in accordance with European rules.

At the moment there are five outbreaks in the Region of Western Greece, three in the Regional Unit of Etoloakarnania and two in the Regional Unit of Ilia and the aim is to complete the clinical control of all animals in the surveillance zones as soon as possible to ensure that there is no further spread of the disease. It should be noted that all five of these outbreaks are epidemiologically linked to infected livestock from the Larissa PE.

The veterinary services of the Region of Western Greece are on alert, while veterinarians and geotechnicians of other specialties of HYPAAT, ELGA, ELGO-DIMITRA, OPEKEPE, as well as private veterinarians from the region are assisting in their efforts.

EFFET teams inform about the milk management measures and check compliance with the biosecurity measures in all the cheese factories in the region.

Compliance with biosecurity measures is also checked during the handling and marketing of animal feed.

As pointed out in the announcement, the contribution of the area’s breeders is also very important, whose active participation is essential for the success of the business.
